About GradChemBio

GradChemBio is the graduate school of the Faculty of Chemistry and Biosciences at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). It is designed to support PhD students who are currently enrolled and conducting research within the faculty.

The central goal of GradChemBio is to create a vibrant, interdisciplinary community for doctoral researchers. The graduate school provides a platform where PhD students can meet regularly, present their research projects, exchange ideas, and learn about ongoing work across different institutes and disciplines within KIT.

GradChemBio brings together researchers from diverse backgrounds, including chemistry, biology, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, and related fields. By fostering interdisciplinary exchange, the graduate school encourages scientific dialogue beyond individual research groups and promotes a broader understanding of research within the faculty.

In addition to scientific exchange, GradChemBio aims to support PhD students in their professional development. The graduate school offers help in addressing challenges during the PhD, opportunities to acquire new scientific and transferable skills, and limited financial support for activities such as conference participation and research-related travel.

What We Offer

Annual Graduate School Retreats

Once a year, GradChemBio organizes a one- to two-day graduate school retreat. During these retreats, PhD students present their research projects, receive feedback from peers, and engage in in-depth scientific discussions. The retreats provide an excellent opportunity to network with fellow doctoral researchers, learn about available expertise and infrastructure across institutes, and openly discuss challenges related to research or the PhD process.
The scientific program is complemented by social activities, such as group excursions or hiking, which help strengthen the graduate school community.

Informal Social Events

Several times a year, GradChemBio hosts informal social events, such as pizza evenings or casual meet-ups. These events are intentionally organized without supervisors to create a relaxed atmosphere where PhD students can exchange experiences, discuss their projects, and talk about everyday challenges in an open and informal setting.

Soft Skills and Training Courses

GradChemBio regularly offers soft-skills courses tailored to the needs and interests of its members. These may include training in presentation skills, scientific writing, communication, Python or programming, data analysis, and other transferable skills. The selection of topics is flexible and guided by the interests and feedback of the PhD students.

Travel Grants

Depending on available funding, GradChemBio offers a limited number of travel grants each year. These grants are intended to support participation in scientific conferences, workshops, or seminars and help PhD students present their research and expand their professional networks.
